New Spiegel Building, Hamburg

The window on the town

The new Spiegel headquarters and the neighbouring office complex, the Ericus-Contor, a fourteen and nine-storey building pair, expand the gallery of internationally recognized architectural works in Hamburg. The publisher’s headquarters and office block, two impressive examples of glass architecture, stand together on the same brick base. The buildings, nestled in the Ericusspitze, with their irregular trapezoidal ground plan, were designed by the Danish firm Henning Larsen Architects. Seen from the north side, the 61-metre-high Spiegel editorial building looks like a window on the town and lets the viewer see deep inside. The glass shell can be used for multimedia projections; it is also part of the reason for the building’s outstanding energy balance. ipasol neutral 68/37 solar control glass and iplus E thermal insulation glass from Interpane ensure that the rooms are flooded with daylight, without overheating in the summer sun or losing heat on cold days.

"Location, location and location": The Ericus Quarter is a prime waterfront setting near Hamburg’s "Docklands", the "Speicherstadt", just minutes on foot from the city centre and the central station. Visitors appreciate its maritime flair and the sight of the old façades around the Brooktor port. Here, at the north eastern entrance to the "Harbour City", the headquarters of the Spiegel Group and the Ericus-Contor, with its office and warehouse space, emerge out of a common brick base. All the editorial staff of the publishing group recently moved into the 30,000 square metres of gross floor area in their building and have an unbeatable panoramic view of the port.

Award for outstanding sustainability

With its unusual construction, built by façade builders Schindler Fenster & Fassadenbau (Roding), the headquarters plays in the premier league energetically as well as optically. The air conditioning has already received the prized Hafencity Gold certificate for outstanding "green" buildings. The certificate is awarded for sustainable utilization of energy and public resources, the use of environmentally friendly building materials, the consideration of health and comfort aspects and the sustainable operation of the building. Almost all the façades of the building are covered with triple insulation glass (iplus E from Interpane) in a beam-and-column construction. On the ground floor, in the highly transparent structural glazing façade of the central part of the building and in the wide roof, ipasol neutral 68/37 solar control glass ensures colour-neutral transparency and an outstanding energy balance. Because of the low total energy transmittance (solar factor = 37 percent according to EN 410), the rooms behind the glass warm up less, removing the need for exterior shading. Nonetheless, lots of daylight (V = 68 percent) reaches them. Light reflection on the exterior is minimal, leading to a particularly colour-neutral appearance and maximum transparency. The light reflection from inside is also minimal, ensuring an outstanding view to the outside, even with the internal lighting turned on. The neighbouring Ericus-Contor is protected with iplus E double insulation glazing and ipasol neutral 68/37 solar control glass.

The heating and cooling system is also clever: ground heat exchangers and photovoltaic panels reduce the need for non regenerative energy; the glass façade is naturally rear ventilated – making classical air-conditioners and radiators unnecessary. Radiant heating and cooling panels on the office ceilings regulate the climate through gentle radiation, improving the sensation of well-being. The whole building is heated and cooled in this environmentally friendly manner, without preventing the manual opening of office windows.

Buffer zone of light and fresh air

The glass-covered atrium (ipasol neutral 68/37 solar control glazing), which spans all floors, creates a pillar of light and air surrounded by galleries. Whenever the employees move from office to office, or walk over the many bridges and stairs to another level, they have a clear view of the sky. The architects have succeeded in creating the perfect image of transparency, networking and communication. The colour concept of the interior is marked by white, often removable, wall panels, grey carpeting and lots of natural wood. Only the already almost legendary "colour explosion" of the snack bar from the old building consciously falls outside this mould. The designers shipped this homage to earlier times to the fifth floor: coloured prisms of fabric, wall-mounted and hanging lamps, mainly in bold orange and purple. It is safe to assume that this is the place where new recruits will be introduced to the myths of Spiegel history. An alternative is the cafeteria on the ground floor – with its terrace right by the water.

Energetically modernized with “sunglasses”

Requirements of modernization: low air-conditioning costs, glare-free view to the outside, and always the optimal lighting conditions

The “House of Architects” in Stuttgart is a forum for building culture and the headquarters of the Chamber of Architects of Baden-Württemberg. The glazed foyer has just been completely modernized. Some pane edges had become leaky and the glass had become fogged by condensation between the panes. The glazing was also far below current energetic standards. The sun blinds, which were on the inside, required constant maintenance and blocked the view. The complex requirements for the modernization were to lower the heating and cooling costs, improve the lighting, and provide a clear, glare-free view, unobstructed by shading. The owners opted for electrochromic triple-pane solar control glass from EControl in Plauen, Germany. It is dimmable, thus allowing the solar factor and transparency to be modified according to the level of solar irradiation. This makes both exterior shading and interior blinds redundant.

The House of Architects in Stuttgart is situated in an exposed, elevated location and offers exceptional views of Stuttgart. More than two decades ago the owner, the architects’ pension fund, bought a plot neighbouring their existing premises and held a competition for the new building. Architect Michael Weindel (Waldbronn) designed and built the ensemble of three structures: living quarters, event hall and administration building. The round event hall stands as a special construction in the middle and is attached to the administration building by a transparent and filigree glazed foyer, thus preserving the grandiose view of the Stuttgart skyline from Danneckerstraße.

Leaks and water: renovation required

For some time, the edges of some glass units had become leaky and the glass panes had become fogged. Every now and then, water would also leak from the glass ceiling. The double pane solar control glazing was not up to current standards for the heating and air conditioning of the foyer: in winter the building was too cold, in summer it overheated. The interior blinds required constant maintenance and blocked the view.

The architects’ office Pauls (Stuttgart) won the contract to modernize the glazed foyer. The aims: maintain the architecture, increase the comfort and reduce the energy costs to a moderate level. Exterior shading and interior blinds were both rejected in favour of maintaining an unhindered view to the outside. Traditional solar control glass, with a low but constant solar factor, was not considered because it lets in too little light on cloudy days.

Intelligent solution: dimmable solar control

After weighing up the parameters, the architect suggested electrochromic solar control glass (EControl). Dimmable panes allow the solar factor and the transparency to be adapted to the actual light intensity. “If there is no sun, the glass stays fully clear and transparent. The stronger the sun shines, the darker the glass becomes, all the way to a deep blue – like photochromic ski goggles”, explains Dipl.-Ing. Michael Pauls, architect and owner of the architects’ office. Photochromic sunglasses make additional eye protection unnecessary and don’t tire the eyes; they adapt to the light intensity. The dimmable solar control glass EControl carries this principle over to modern architecture with its electrochromic technology. A modern triple-pane insulation glass, EControl insulates extremely well against heat loss with a Ug value of 0.7 W/(m2K).

The complete renovation was carried out in only twelve weeks in the summer of 2011 by the façade construction company Guttendörfer (Ansbach) – whilst limited operations at the House of Architects forum continued – and was completed in the autumn.

The most expensive apartment in the world?

165 million euros: exclusive living in One Hyde Park / 14,000 square metres of triple insulation glass with solar control coating for the perfect climate

Knightsbridge, City of Westminster. This luxury neighbourhood has the finest restaurants, the most exclusive boutiques and now, perhaps the most expensive apartment in the world: One Hyde Park. The 14-storey building, inaugurated in the spring of 2011, is a complex of four interconnected towers designed by architect Richard Rogers of Rogers Stirk Harbour and Partners. The inhabitants of the penthouses have a breath-taking view of the city of London and of Hyde Park through the large areas of glazing in every room. To ensure colour-neutral transparency, thermal insulation on cold winter days and protection from the sun’s heat in the summer, the glazing is made of modern triple insulation glass. Interpane provided the 14,000 square metres of iplus E thermal insulation glass with ipasol neutral 61/33 solar control coating.

Hyde Park on one side, Knightsbridge on the other: One Hyde Park is perfectly situated. Hyde Park, the most well-known of the eight “royal parks”, stretches over 1.4 square kilometres, divided by the 11 hectares of the Serpentine. The park and the lake are loved by Londoners and tourists alike. The lake is perfect for a swim or a row; with a permit, even fishing is allowed. If one prefers land activities, one can use the horse riding facilities or the bowling alley, or just picnic on the grass. Should the well-heeled dwellers of One Hyde Park choose instead to go for a stroll in Knightsbridge, they can enjoy exclusive shops such as Harrods, Harvey Nichols or Prada, the finest restaurants and the chicest bars and clubs. Buckingham Palace is barely a mile away. Those who wish to stay in their apartment can make use of the excellent 24-hour room service of the associated five-star Mandarin-Oriental Hotel or the in house wellness, gastronomy and shopping facilities.

Exclusive glass architecture with ipasol neutral

Four towers, ten to fourteen storeys high, linked to each other by glass stairwells and elevator shafts, a private underground car park, 84 luxury apartments including 4 penthouses: this is One Hyde Park. The most “affordable” flats go for 6.4 million euros, the most expensive are worth 165 million euros. The most exclusive of the apartments is spread over two levels, has seven rooms and a total floor area of 2,700 square metres. Just as impressive as the size of the apartment is the 360 degree view it affords of Hyde Park and London. The colour-neutral glazing lets the inhabitants observe the comings and goings in the busy streets of the British capital unhindered. The ipasol 61/33 solar control coating ensures that the rooms don’t overheat in the summer, thereby reducing air conditioning costs. The building nonetheless receives ample daylight. On cold days, the low Ug value of the triple insulation glass with its iplus E coating provides effective thermal insulation. The energetic properties of the glass façade reduce energy consumption and protect the environment.

The inhabitants are also well-protected. The façade and the windows are bomb and bullet proof, the elevators are activated by a retina scanner, the security personal was trained by the Special Air Service (SAS), and the most exclusive apartments have a panic room where the residents can take shelter in the very unlikely event of a break-in.

The official opening of the building has just taken place after four years of construction work. Richard Rogers, whose office designed the building, received the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2007.

At the BAU 2011 (hall C2, stand 329), Interpane presented the new triple insulation glazing iplus 3LS with top transmittance values: A solar factor of 63 per cent and a light transmittance of 74 per cent. In terms of appearance, the “super warm glazing” features excellent colour neutrality (Ra,D = 98-99). The manufacturer also showed a prototype of a triple glazing with the new “ipadry” coating that protects against outside condensation.

At the BAU 2011 (hall C2, stand 329), Interpane presented innovations and optimised glazing products. Two of the innovations are part of the ipasol solar control glazing line. The manufacturer showed a pilot study with a new triple silver coating. This coating provides the glazing with excellent selectivity. Although the light transmittance is relatively high at 63 per cent (for ipasol 63/29), the glazing achieves an extremely low solar factor of just 29 per cent.
